He is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of the rock band Thursday. Rickly's musical journey started during his time at Dumont High School in Dumont, New Jersey, where he was an active member of the school band and played the tenor sax.

Rickly has contributed to various genres such as post-hardcore, emo, indie rock, screamo, post-punk, hardcore punk, and alternative rock. Aside from his successful stint with Thursday, he is also a member of the hardcore punk band United Nations, and the alternative rock group No Devotion.

Rickly's talents are not limited to music. He published his novel "Someone Who Isn’t Me" in 2023. He is also the founder of the record label Collect Records.

Despite facing health challenges due to epilepsy, he has continued to be active in the music industry, guest voicing in songs like My American Heart's "We Are the Fabrication", Murder by Death's "Killbot 2000", and others.
