Former Juneau resident Melvin L. Flood died Dec. 17, 2001, at his residence in Lakeside, Ohio.

He was born Dec. 5, 1941, in Downers Grove, Ill., to Leslie and Louise (Bolin) Flood.

A multi-talented musician, Flood earned a degree in music education from the University of Illinois in 1963, a master's degree in music-flute performance from the Manhattan School of Music in 1967, and a doctorate in study-flute performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1973-74. He continued his education in 1991-92 with graduate studies in jazz performance and choral conducting at the University of Southern California.

In his career as a music instructor and conductor he lived in many places throughout the United States. He was the music director and conductor of the Juneau Symphony and an associate professor of music at the University of Alaska Southeast from 1982 to his retirement in 1998. His hobbies included traveling with the Sounds of Hope while touring Europe in the 1980s, singing and playing music.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald Flood.

He is survived by his son, Eric Chapman of California, and numerous cousins.
