U.S. Veteran

On December 31, 2020, our beloved Father Robert Aguilar went to be with the Lord at the age of 92. He was born on November 15, 1928 in Douglas, Arizona. He attended Douglas public schools where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He was very proud to have played with legendary football players such as Gib Dawson and the Castillo brothers. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Army where he was a paratrooper for the 11th Airborne Division, 187th Regiment. He was honorably discharged in December of 1952. When he returned from the Army, he worked for Johnson Cleaners and began his career with Phelps Dodge Copper Smelter, where he retired after 28 years. He then got his GED (General Education Development) certificate in May of 1985 and began a new career with the Douglas Unified School District as a teacher’s aide and bus driver where he worked for many years leading to his second retirement. He was a hard worker and was always doing projects on his home when he was not at work.

In November 1952 he married his love Hortencia Lopez and they raised four children Ana Louisa, Bobby, Mando, and DeeDee. They were married for 48 years when Hortencia passed away October of 2000. Together they have eleven (11) grand children and thirteen (13) great-grandchildren.

In 2001 he began a relationship with Rachel Bonner whom he shared 19 years of life, love, and laughter with. He loved Rachel till he took his last breath. We will be forever grateful to her for making our father so happy.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He was a boxer and boxing coach for many years in Douglas. He played baseball for the Pirtleville All-Stars. He loved to dance, he loved his wife, he loved his children and grandchildren and he loved Rachel Bonner. He had the best “Aguilar” smile that we all carry as our signature smile. He was always very caring and polite with anyone he met.

Robert Aguilar was the biggest Douglas Bulldog fan and you could always see him at every football, basketball, softball, and baseball game. He supported the Bulldogs every season year after year. Once a Bulldog Always a Bulldog!

He is preceded in death by his wife Hortencia Aguilar, son Robert Aguilar Jr., mother Anita Navarro, his sisters Marylou Santos, Delia Tanori, Matilde Elias, his brother’s Abelardo Aguilar and Fred Navarro.

He is survived by his sister Ofelia Navarro Leon, his children Ana (Frank) Romero, Armando Aguilar, DeeDee (Jesus) Lozania, eleven grandchildren: Corina (Mike) Flynn, Roseanna (David) Bermudez, Tara (Jose) Mena, John David (Brianna) Aguilar, Lacey (Alex) Sallard, Miriah (Enrique) Franco, Britney Salazar, Robert Salazar, Alyssa (Chris) Meehan, Jessica Lozania, and Cristian Lozania, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers: Armando Aguilar, John David Aguilar, Jesus Lozania, Cristian Lozania, Nicholas Mena, and Alex Sallard.

Honorary pallbearers: Frank Romero, Mike Flynn, David Bermudez, Jose Mena, Robert Salazar, Christopher Meehan, Enrique Franco
