Stevie was almost deaf and had to wear hearing aids which were kinda large and bulky back then. Because of his intelligence and determination he was able to attend regular school. He was very good at reading lips.
Stevie read all the time. When not in class you would see him in the common areas reading a book. He also loved comic books. He meticulously saved his comics for years. He had a storage room packed full of comics. His dream was to open a book store on Hope Mills Road.
We both worked at Methodist University. He wanted to enroll in some classes. I was helping Stevie with his admission process before he got sick. He was diagnosed with cancer and passed within a few weeks. It happened so fast. And then he was gone. Many dreams unfulfilled simply because he ran out of time. Stevie lived in the Ashton Forest neighborhood where he grew up. He had many brothers and sisters. There were 10 siblings in all. Stevie is wearing the aqua blue T-shirt in the photo.
