About Me I just finished my first quarter, teaching "research methods," as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Global Studies, at UCSB. After living on the east coast of the US, as well as working in Africa and the Middle East for a number of years, I have finally come back home to California! I am in the Altadena/Pasadena area now. I have been busy. Until August of '07, I had been living and working in New York City. I was teaching graduate students at Columbia University, as well as working as an internal consultant with the NYC Dept. of Health. I was recently awarded a Ph.D. I am divorced. I have one son who is currently with his cousins in Nigeria. Back in the early 1980s, while an honors undergraduate at U.C. Berkeley, I got my black belt in judo, and was on the Cal judo team. At one point I was ranked 4th in the country among college competitors. I later went to the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs, in New York City, where I got two masters degrees: one in public admin and the other in international affairs. I also got a huge fellowship to learn Swahili--the language of East Africa! That experience included a semester abroad, in East Africa. I later went on to work for CARE International as the Deputy Regional Manager for East Africa. This involved working in countries like Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, and Somalia. I have been to the source of the River Nile! I have been lost in the Sahara desert (not fun)! I have experienced one palace coup (by the Nigerian military), and four revolutions! (And, no, I do not work for the CIA). I was a resident of New York City, during the attacks of 9/11. I've seen a few things, people. I have been back in the United States since the late 1990s; although I still miss Africa terribly. My recent doctoral research was on the socio-economic impact of global petroleum depletion (with particular emphasis on how that impacts international debt). In simple terms: I am asking what is going to happen as we gradually run out of cheap oil and gas. I had just entered DP shortly after the first energy crisis hit (remember those gas lines, back in 1974?). These days, my interest is in energy systems, global ecology, and how these things affect the economy--especially in the Third World. Okay, there is a little bit about me. Of course, there is always more to the story, but we will have to leave that for another time. [smile] I hope this message finds you in a good place, wherever that may be, and that you are enjoying being ther...(read more)
