Favorite School Memory Everything!! Probably getting to go to AC & Winfield to sell ads for the Yearbook. Also marching in the Arkalalah paradw with the band. Loved Journalism/Writing. I was one of those Geeks who actually loved English Class. Eva Kemp gave me "A's", but I gave that dear woman a run for her money. Was somewhat the class clown. Sorry. Loved seeing my dad on a rare occasion -- like the night I got Basketball queen. I was most proud that he was there with my mother. Loved singing in the school programs, too. Loved the school plays. Loved hanging out in a small town where everyone knew you & told your parents on you if they needed to. Thanks to all my old neighbors who helped raise us all. I liked going through school three years behind my brother. He could never tell on me because I could tell on him! He was old enough to drive me to practice for plays, etc. I was not very good in sports, except maybe volleyball. Enjoyed the pep band. I had a great class & they were all a lot of f...(read more)
About Me Wow - since high school I had 4 children - three girls & a boy. And we held Jennifer's funeral service in the old gym in the fall of 1999. She was killed in an auto accident on her way back to K-State. That was probably the single most challenging event of my life. I have lived on the east & west coast with Randy's military career. We moved 17 times and I was so happy when we got to move home. We bought the Brazil farm (160 acres) out by Bill Marker 6 miles northeast of Dexter. We raise cattle & hay & pretend we are ranchers just to be able to live in the wide-open country. It is so beautiful in the spring & fall. Besides being a stay-at-home mom for many, many years, I went to East Carolina University where I received a BS in Communication/Radio & Writing. I also received a BA from Southwestern in Education/Secondary English & am certified in High School Language Arts. I received a Graduate Certificate from Wichita State University in Educational Technology. I started a community Newspaper (the Eastern Cowley County Advocate) that later became a Regional Magazine & it ran for 2 1/2 years. That was fun - but expensive. Maybe when I retire I'll pick that back up. I started a community 501-C Non-Profit Resource Center in August of 2003. With that, I organized community workshops through Cowley College to help people learn basic computer skills. We organized many other types of community workshops like quilting & E-Bay classes. The biggest project of ECCRC is building a library for the town of Dexter - Lighthouse Library. It is set behind the old Shadid store at 104 S. Main. We had fund-raisers for two years & purchased all the lumber for the project. We are still working to complete that. We collected 20,000 books for the library. It will have a courtyard with a 25-ft. working lighthouse. The courtyard will also have an outdoor movie theatre since that is the spot of the original Dexter Theatre. We also have a small variety store planned for the site (The Treasure Chest) & we are completing a lodge (Grouse Valley Lodge) both of which are the library's sustaining funds projects. Funds generated from the store and lodge will go to help fund the library. I will be so thankful when the project is completed. We work on it many weekends when we can, but still need help getting the lumber off the ground & the buildings built. In the fine print, it is a living tribute to Jennifer, but it is mainly a tribute to our hometown. I started a large Education Program in Wichita as the Education Specialist for the Mental Health Assn. of South Central KS. In the fall of 2003, I started the ECCELL high school completion program to help adults finish high school. This is my last year there & it has grown to about 150 adult students. I have seen over 100 adults received...(read more)
