The Deerfield High School Mock Trial Team is entering its second year after a highly successful first season. Because the Board of Education does not fund our team, generous contributions from individuals, law firms, and others within and beyond the Deerfield/Highland Park communities provided the necessary funding, which allowed our team to succeed. In order for our team to continue in the 2010-2011 school year and compete in the ISBA’s state competition, as well as satisfy our school district’s requirement for self-funding, our team needs to raise $3,500 by the end of August.
The Mock Trial Team has provided an invaluable learning opportunity for Deerfield High School and is an asset to the District 113 community as a whole. Mock trial not only offers an outstanding opportunity for students to engage in substantive, vigorous debate within the context of the roles played by trial attorneys, but also provides a challenging and enriching vehicle for students to learn valuable life lessons, such as teamwork, leadership, problem solving, and critical thinking. This past season we participated in the DuPage Regional Tournament, which is regarded as perhaps the most competitive tournament in the state. We finished 7th, in front of many teams that have been competing for decades—and this was only our very first year!
We are led by our two faculty sponsors, Jerry Lavin (an attorney and adjunct law professor) and John McDonald, and two coaches, Chuck Ex (an assistant U.S. attorney) and Dave Rosenbloom (a private defense attorney). They have devoted countless hours to our mock trial team, shepherded our growth over the past year, and have all committed to this upcoming season.
By district policy, funds we collect are sent to and held by the District 113 Foundation, and those funds are earmarked for the exclusive use of the DHS Mock Trial Team (as long as the donation says “For DHS Mock Trialâ€). All donations must be sent to the following address:
