About | Jose Rudolph Andrews III, 49, of Hollywood, formerly of North Dartmouth, Mass., died at home Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001. He was the son of Joseph R. and Edith (Correia) Andrews of North Dartmouth. Born in New Bedford, Mass., he lived in Dartmouth and New York before moving to California in 1988. Mr. Andrews was a professional actor for 20 years and an educator in the California elementary school system. He was involved in the Enrichment Works Program, which teaches the Wampanoag Indian tribe's history and culture. He was a graduate of Dartmouth High School, where he excelled in athletics, attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma University. He was involved in ROTC in college and made the rank of petty officer third class and achieved the Persian rifle braids. His acting career started at Southeastern Massachusetts University, now UMass Dartmouth, under the direction of Angus Bailey. He was the first American Indian to be cast in the role of Chief Tecumseh in the outdoor epic production of "Tecumseh" and first American Indian to portray the lead role of Alessando in "The Ramona Pageant" on its 75th anniversary. The play is the oldest outdoor drama play in the United States. He was an expert horseman and skydiver. He also played a role in the movie "Crocodile Dundee" and had roles in the well-known soap opera series, "Another World" and "One Life To Live." He loved all music, especially classical, which he listened to while memorizing his lines for his next acting role. He was a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Indian Tribe, the Actors Equity Association and the Screen Actors Guild. Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Clyde Andrews and Mark Andrews, both of New Bedford, Mass.; two sisters, Naomi R.A. Carney and her husband, Edward "Ted," of New Bedford, and Cheryl Andrews Maltais and her husband, Daniel, of Edgartown, Mass.; two nephews, Sean Carney and Kyle Andrews; three nieces, Hilary Andrews, Sydnee Carney and Samantha Maltais; and several cousins. |
