About Me | OK - now I'll post a real profile. My name is Gary Rawlings. People from Danville, where I grew up, and London, where most of my family lives, call me Gary Don. I answer to either. After I graduated from high school, I went to the University of Kentucky where I majored in 9 or 10 different things until my mentor teacher, Mrs. Shelburn, suggested that I major in Journalism. And that's what I did. The next bit of sound advice I followed was provided to me by Earl Cox, former Executive Sports Editor at the Courier-Journal who told me to do a lot of things - learn about life - then kick back and write books about my experiences. I've followed his advice and I'm glad. Since then I've written for three magazines - Inside Kentucky Sports, The Thoroughbred Record and The Horseman. I've written for the Lexington Herald Leader, the Courier-Journal and the Oldham Era. I've worked for 4 radio stations, WKLO-AM, WINN-AM, WQMF-FM and WDJX-FM. And I've gotten drunk - too many times - with WAKY's famous Duke of Louisville, Bill Bailey! I'm the publisher of Travelhost Magazine and the Kentucky Proud magazine, Wine & Dine Kentucky Style. And I publish a community guide for Marriott Louisville Downtown. I've written a couple of novels that aren't published yet and I'm the President of a pretty awesome web design company in Louisville called Louisville Web Group. I married Andrea Thomas just after I graduated. That lasted 13 years - we divorced in 1988. I then married the true love of my life, Sande Davis, in 1990. And, yes, she's still tolerating me:) I've got two amazing children, Brittany, 28, and Bradley, 16. Brittany is married to a wonderful fellow named Will Gaunt, a Trinity boy. They brought me a WONDERFUL, CLEVER, BRILLIANT, HANDSOME, TALENTED GRANDSON who is perfect in every way. His name is Charlie. Brad - actually Donald Bradley - was named after his Grandfather, Don Rawlings. Someday, Brad will be a great human being. But right now he's a teenager. God grant me the patience to survive. My mom and dad passed away in 1997. She died after a nightmarish 7 year ordeal with Alzheimer's disease. Dad died just a few weeks later. Dr. Ramey said it was a heart attack. In truth, he died of a broken heart. My little brother Kevin, has been living in New York City for some 20 years. He works at the Metropolitan Opera. He and his bride Stevie (short for Stephanie) live just across the Hudson River from the City, in a cute little quintessentially American town, Verona, New Jersey. Like I said earlier, I'd been given the advice to experience life and, boy, have I ever experienced it. My most memorable experiences revolve around my second hometown, New York. That's where I met my bride to be - we were at LaGuardia, waiting for a flight home. It's also where I happened to be on September 11, 2001. I'd flown in the night before and had a meeting scheduled with a cousin of mine who was a writer for Time Magazine for 10am that morning. We were going to meet near Lincoln Center, at a coffee shop on Broadway. The meeting didn't happen. Coming from Verona, Kevin and I got on I-80 and headed toward Manhattan. On the George Washington Bridge, we ran into a traffic jam...a large truck was on our right side, blocking our view to the south. We were listening to Howard Stern on the radio. In the middle of one of his tirades, he was interrupted by one of his co-workers to give him word there was a fire in the World Trade Center. Kevin asked me if I could see the towers and I couldn't so we had to wait untiil the traffic moved enough so I could see Downtown. The truck finally moved and we saw the towers. There was a gaping hole in the north side of the north tower. It was shaped like an airplane, just a little thicker in the middle. But the airplane shape was obvious. Words can't describe how horrible this experience was for me and my brother. We were filled with dread about what the conditions were like in the tower and the kind of hell those poor people in that building were going through. Kevin said prophetically, "Have a good look. Might be the last time we'll ever see it." Just as we got over the bridge, the second plane hit the south tower. I saw the fireball erupt and a giant smoke plume rising. We were the next to last car allowed to cross into Manhattan. The police blocked anyone from exiting right behind the car that was following us. - better get bac...(read more) |
