About Me | Immediately after graduating from UWMadison in 1967, I spent a year as an American Red Cross volunteer in South Vietnam—nothing like a war zone to jump start life as an adult! I returned to grad school at UW in 1968, and then took a job with Headstart in Washington, DC. I found living in the inner city of DC in 1969 was like being back in a war zone, but I loved the kids and families I worked with and would have enjoyed continuing, but my new husband, Will, was a career military man, and for the next ten years we moved at the pleasure of the Pentagon. My son, Mark was born in 1972 and daughter Jenny in 1976. Will retired from the army and started a consulting engineering and surveying firm back in WI. I traded in teaching for working with our new company, and kept very busy with kids and community activities. When Will died in 1995, both Mark and Jenny were students at UW Madison and I went back to school to update my teaching credentials. I started working for Headstart in Madison just as both my children graduated-Mark with a law degree and Jen with a degree from the School of Human Ecology (my alma mater!). I felt like I had come full circle, and was back where I started, older and wiser, but doing what I love! I spent 15 years working in the Allied Dr neighborhood Headstart agency, working with a family literacy and ESL programs. I was there long enough to see many of my preschool students grow up, enter college and start families of their own. I can’t imagine a more gratifying job, and only stopped working because of a near-fatal auto accident in 2014 that left me incapacitated for over a year. I feel blessed to now be walking again. I feel like I have a second chance at life, and am spending as much time as possible enjoying grandchildren, Cora (12) and Soren, (6), my wonderful extended family and dear friends. I volunteer at my grandkids’ schools and a Madison childcare center for homeless kids. Have been enjoying continuing education classes—latest one called The Muslim Experience in Madison. It is wonderful to have the time and the health to pursue the things I love. I am especially thankful that after my parents passed, my siblings and I were able to keep the 80 acre Reddeman homestead in Sauk County in the family! My grandparents acquired the land in 1904 and though it was never a very productive farm, it occupies a lovely spot surrounded by the Baraboo Hills yet only 40 minutes away from Madison. The retirement home built by my parents on the land is where we gather for holidays, family reunions etc. What a joy to see the fifth generation of our family enjoy exploring the trails and woods of land filled wit...(read more) |
