About | Kathryn "Kathy" Currens Kathryn “Kathy” M. Currens, 45, of Fargo, N.D., former Miles City resident, died Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at MeritCare Palliative Care, surrounded by her daughter, Stephanie, and her care team of friends, after a courageous eight-year battle with cancer. Born Oct. 29, 1961, in Lemmon, S.D., she was the first child of John and Mary Lou Kirchoff Currens. She lived in Lemmon; Park River, N.D.; Bloomington, Minn.; and Gettysburg, S.D., prior to moving to Miles City. There she attended Custer County District High School, graduating in 1979. She attended Miles Community College for two years before transferring to St. Cloud Business College, obtaining her court reporting diploma in 1984. She and daughter, Stephanie, moved to Fargo in 1984 and she worked in freelance court reporting for a year prior to joining Professional Financial Consultants. From there, she worked for Dakota First Trust, Nodak Mutual Insurance, Eide Bailly & Company, and Great Plains Software now Microsoft Business Solutions. She developed many close friends in her time in Fargo. She was dedicated to her friends and was always willing to assist others. She knew how to add happiness and fun to life, taking the time to savor a discussion, a joke or some chocolate. Her family and friends will miss her smile, her sense of humor and her kindness. She was young at heart, and especially loved the very young members of her family, giving generously of her time and energy to nieces and nephews. Diagnosed with cancer in 1999, she fought bravely to extend and to enjoy her life. She participated in Relay For Life events, raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Throughout her battle, she was supported strongly by her numerous friends. She spent her last three months at MeritCare’s Palliative Care Unit. There she touched many more lives and received wonderful care from staff as well as her care team of friends and her family. Her survivors include her daughter, Stephanie Currens of Fargo; her father and step-mother, John and Marge Currens, Gering, Neb.; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Susan Currens of Paynesville, Minn., and Michael and Jennifer Currens of Eagan, Minn.; her sister and brother-in-law, Patti and Jeremy Lyon of Thornton, Colo.; and her nieces and nephews, Matthew and Anna Currens of Paynesville, Mara and Benjamin Currens of Eagan, and Emma Lyon of Thornton. She was was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Lou Currens in 2000. A funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2007, in the Church of the Nativity in Fargo. A private family inurnment will be held at West Lawn Cemetery, Gering, Neb., on Friday, April 13, 2007. Medora West-Roehl West Funeral Home in West Fargo is in charge of arrangements.
