Dorothy (Dickens) Meyerink

Class of 1944

I've always loved to read and write, so became a Library Club member for 3 years in High School and enjoyed Mr. Lamb's Engish classes. I contributed to the RCS newsletter "Central Chatter" and was Art Editor for a while.
I've continued writing stories and poems since graduation and have had several published. In November 2011 my book "Ministry Among the Maya" was published by Eerdmans in Grand Rapids, MI. This is the story of the mission work and ministry by members of the Reformed Church in America in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. My husband, Paul, and I went to Chiapas the year after he graduated from Seminary and lived and served for 38 years among one of the Mayan groups, the Tzeltal (Sell-tall) Maya. Our assignment was to establish a Bible School for leadership training for the growing Tzeltal church. Eventually the Mayans were trained and able to completely manage the Bible School themselves. Paul then became involved in Bible translation (first, doing a re-translation of the first New Testament and then overseeing the translation of the Old Testament) in the Mayan language we had learned to speak.
My book describes the growth of the indigenous church but also many of the experiences of our family. We went in 1956 with a 3 1/2 yr. old son and a 9-month old daughter. Our younger daughter was born in Mexico.
I have copies of my book for sale at a discounted price: $25 (plus $5 for mailing if it is sent to you). If you're interested, e-mail me: xanich2@frontiernet.net or write to me at 217 Rayfield Circle, Webster, NY 14580 or stop in, if you're in the Rochester, NY area.
Since retirement in 1993, I studied and was commissioned as a "Preaching Elder" at age 80. I enjoy preparing worship services and preaching in variious
Reformed Churches in our area. God has blessed and helped us through the years and given us many blessings.
