Richard Zajack
Class of 1961
Navy, 4 Years
I was a Flight Engineer aboard a P2V-7 Neptune Navy Patrol Bomber. Our primary mission was anti submarine warfare and photo reconnaissance. Our squadron, VP-56, played a key role during the Cuban Missle Crisis, flying patrols from Guantanamo Bay Cuba. We also spent two six month deployments in Iceland, in 1962 and 1965. The cold war was in full swing and our mission was to keep track of the Russian Naval Forces in the North Atlantic. During this period we flew patrols from NATO bases in Norway, Denmark and Scotland. We also flew patrols from Puerto Rico, and numerous other Caribbean islands as well as Venezzuela. I accumulated over 2700 hours in the P2V-7 Neptune.
