About | Rose was born in Robbinsdale, MN. She was the youngest of 10 children born to Orville and Priscilla. Her siblings are Esther (deceased), Susanne (deceased), Jordan, Peter, Lydia, Mary (CHS'67), Hope (CHS'70), Faith (CHS'70) and Miriam (CHS'72). Orville was an educator and in 1962, moved the family to San Diego upon getting a job with the SD Unified School District. The family made their home in the College area and Rose attended Crawford High, where she was a song leader. She also attended SDSU where she was a cheerleader and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and later obtained her Masters. Rose married Tim Smith, whom she met at Crawford. In 1981, Rose and Tim were blessed with their daughter Miranda (Hofstee) and two years later, her second daughter Alexandra was born. Rose enjoyed a 30-year career as a CPA for SDG&E/Sempra, where she made lots of great friends. In 1974, the Aftreth family began a tradition of playing hand-bells at Christmas events all over San Diego. The family was also featured on The Price Is Right in the early 80’s. They played their hand-bells on national TV. Rose was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and was an avid world traveler. Her trips took her to every continent but Antarctica. In 2015 alone, Rose made it to Santa Fe, New York and China. Rose also loved attending the theater in New York and locally at the Old Globe, Lambs Players and La Jolla Playhouse. One of Rose’s greatest joys were her five grandchildren from daughter Miranda and Donald Hofstee. They are Kai, Kael, Koen, Kingston and Korenna. Rose will be remembered fondly as a loving friend, mother and grandmother. |
