Ray died of complications from cancer in 2008. A Rolfing and Rolf Movement practitioner since 1995, he was a beloved member of the Atlanta Rolfing Community He attended the New England Conservatory, and graduated magna cum laude from Rhode Island College. He earned his master's degree in musicology from Indiana University, and his PH.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
