Roy grew up in Covington, OK. He entered the U.S. Army in 1962. He was a field communications corpsman/ wireman forward observer for the Headquarters Battery 1st Howitzer 92nd Artillery. He was honorably discharged in March of 1963 and entered the U.S. Army Reserve, serving until 1968. He married Brenda Joyce Stover in April of 1962. Roy was a true outdoorsman. He loved to fish; tournament bass fishing was his favorite.
