About Me | The following is a poem I wrote in honor of my late Husband, Tom Nauman. I read it at his memorial service June 7, 2013, at Pacific Crest Cemetery in Redondo Beach, CA. "Mountaintop Prayer" "By their fruits you shall know them."--Matthew 7:20 To My Dear and Darling Husband Thomas Woodrow Nauman Honey, from teacher friend and mentor to love of my life You gave me hope and a future; you made me your wife. You taught me what true love is, in so many ways I'll always be grateful for each and every one of our days. Locke High School was our home away from home Bustling with highly energized L.A. teens on the roam. Most were friendly innocents wanting an education But some had tempers and demands for any recognition. As English Department chair your perseverance for justice, your character and jokes And personalized candies (like Rolos) given to tired-out teachers Brought many a silver lining to a Stormy Monday day. Unfortunately I got caught in episodes of bipolar disorder And each time you fought for me to return to teaching But finally my condition broke the camel's back And LAUSD asked me to resign and never come back. (This was the second lowest point in my life.) But as I moved from hospital to hospital First you kept in touch with my mother And then you started phoning me and courting me Like never another. From Dexter Street in West Covina you took me shopping: For apples, milk, potatoes and then my pretty diamond ring. You asked my mom if I could live with you And then you asked me to forever be true And I said yes! I'll be true blue. We lived on Rolling Hills Road for a time With your son Todd and Persian Puff You loved to call her MB (short for Mange Ball) Then we moved to Arrowbear with our family three: MB, you and me. Our mountain adventure included brilliant sun, fuzzy fog, eerie ice and flaky snow And evergreen wonders in magical momented days. You spoiled me in the highlands--with precious flowers, with witty cards, With artistically-wrapped presents and with hearty human laughter And oyster stews, pot roasts and posse stews for some winter's evening meal-- Barbecues in the summer--always such a thrill. Leisurely walks in the afternoon by lakes and in our neighborhood Crime shows and murder mysteries on TV. Your WWII aviation scale-modeling passion Plus our respective church activities kept us in action. From defeated veteran schoolteacher I became grounded in self-assurance and comfort. You encouraged my spiritual growth. Twelve years of self-confidence and joy Twelve years of sweet marital bliss I will always love my eternal hero And the hilltop memory of our first wedded kiss. Your legacy is a treasure of people who loved you; Family, colleagues, friends and students Whose lives you quietly touched and made ever so much more dear For your having been there--ever so near. Thank you, Tom, for your intelligence and wisdom Your understanding, perception, and comprehension Your endurance, strength, insight and perspicacity. These, and chivalry, made you truly you. So, again, my dear and darling husband Thomas W. Nauman Honey, from teacher friend and mentor to love of my life You gave me hope and a future; you made me your wife. You taught me what true love is; in so many ways I'll always be grateful for each and every one of our days. Soar spiritward, sweetheart! Soar like an American eagle; Soar like Jonathan Li...(read more) |
