| About Me | After completing my BS in Botany at the University of Michigan, I headed south to Louisiana for graduate school, where I earned my MS and PhD, and met/married my wife, Carolla. We spent a year-plus in Athens, Georgia where I had a post-doc in the horticulture department, then on to Longwood Gardens in SE Pennsylvania for seven years, where I worked as a researcher developing new crops for display in their greenhouses. Our two daughters came into our lives during this time. In 1995 I returned to the Midwest, family in tow, when I accepted a position as Director of Research at Chicago Botanic Garden, where I have been employed ever since. Currently I am a plant breeder developing new perennial plants for garden use, as well as am an adjunct professor with Northwestern University. Some career highlights include the first ever orange coneflower brought to the marketplace, nine patents (more to follow!), and the opportunity to go collect plants in South Africa, China, as well as some fascinating and remote corners of the U.S. One daughter is in college and still living with us, the other daughter, her husband, and grandson are (alas) now living in California. I continued running off and on for many years after high school, until my knees finally gave out at age 49, but two years ago I discovered biking and have been having a blast with that ever since. Family all melted away from Michigan between 1979 and 1982, but my wife and I have been back to Michigan four or five times exploring both the lower and upper peninsulas.
