Born to Pauline & Carroll Shields in Iowa, he was raised in Corvallis. He was pastor of Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles from 1981 to 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Nadia; daughters, Sarah & Elizabeth; prents; sister, Anna Chase; and a niece & nephew.
