About Larry Joe Enos, 58, of Brookings, died of cancer September 18, 2002, at his home.
He was born Dec 4, 1943, in Eugene to Joe and Marjorie Ward Enos.
He spent his early childhood years in Brownsville and elementary school years in Philomath. The family moved to Corvallis where he graduated from Corvallis High School in 1962.
During high school, he was an All-state basketball player for three years and an All-Anmerican High School basketball player in his senior year. Even with the addition of three-point scoring, he still holds the leading scoring record at Corvallis High School, and is still listed in the top five scorers in Oregon.
After high school, he completed most of college on basketball scholarships; he attended Oregon State University 1962-63, then transferred to Lewis & Clark College in Portland where he played until injured in his senior year. He then transferred to Portland State University where he graduated in 1967 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education and a double minor in social studies and biology. He attended graduate school at Arizona State University.
While in Arizona, he met Patti Sue Grantham, and they were married Feb 2, 1973, in Glendale, AZ. Together, they raised a family of six children.
Mr. Enos taught at Cortez High School in Phoenix, AZ for most of the next 21 years. In the early 1990's, he taught briefly at Corvallis High School before moving to Brookings. He taught and coached at Brookings-Harbor High School for eight years, until illness forced his retirement last spring.
Enos considered himself first a teacher. He had a unique teqching style and a knack for making subjects interesting. He was a "master coach." During his career he had coached basketball, track, cross-country, football, baseball and softball. He was a disciplined individual and a demanding coach. He strove to bring out the best of each athlete's individual abilities.
He was a quiet and kind man. He strove daily to give his best efforts, and had high expectations of his students as well. He enjoyed spending time with his family, running, golfing and fishing. He was a member of Brookings Trinity Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; five sons: Chris and Robin, Steve and fiance Susan, all of Tucson, AZ; Clint and Tina Enos, Vince Enos and Wes Enos, all of Brookings; and a daughter, Ellie Enos, also of Brookings.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
