| About | UNITY HIXINBAUGH Burlington Railroad conductor Daniel Joseph Hixinbaugh married Frances Lanora Evans. As was commonplace in those days, Daniel and Frances bore a large brood: six daughters and a son. The baby of the family was born on September 4, 1914 at Unity Hospital in Creston, Iowa, and was named after the place of her birth and for her mother: Unity Frances Hixinbaugh. Unity was the first of the family to migrate to Southern California, where she taught high school physical education in Corona. Her Father had passed away, and her Mother was an invalid, so Unity went back to Iowa and persuaded Mom and Sisters Jessie, Irene, and Loretta to come back with her to Riverside. Mom and the "girls" moved into the newly constructed house on Rees Street that Jessie had bought, and which remained Unity\'s home the rest of her life. Over the years, the four sisters, Jessie, Irene, Loretta, and Unity became constant fixtures in Sunday worship and other activities at First Christian Church in Riverside. Unity became deeply involved in congregational activities, holding various offices, including co-Chairing the Worship Department, and serving as a member of the Diaconate. The sisters were avid travelers, especially as they reached retirement. Unity was the photographer of the group, documenting the family cruises and tours around the world. As a PE teacher at Corona, "Coach Hix" inspired in a generation of young women the values of fitness, sportsmanship, and willingness to compete. She continued her weekly forays onto the golf course well into her later years. She was a rabid Dodgers and Lakers fan, with an abiding affection for Kobe Bryant. She loved her weekly visits to the casinos, usually managing to win enough to more than cover the trip. On Friday, March 13, 2010, while watching "Her Lakers", Unity Hixinbaugh lapsed into unconsciousness from which she never awakened. On Tuesday, March 16, succumbing to the suspected stroke, she went to be with her beloved father, mother, brother, and five sisters. She will be going home to Creston, Iowa for interment in Graceland Cemetery there. A Memorial Service will celebrate her life at First Christian Church in Riverside at a date to be announced. |
