Armand Anthony Assante Jr., notably known as Armand Assante, was born on October 4, 1949, in New York City and was raised in Cornwall, New York. Armand, of Italian and Irish descent, attended and graduated from Cornwall Central High School.

Armand's career in acting took flight in the 1970s, being a regular on NBC soap operas like How to Survive a Marriage and The Doctors. However, his first film appearance came in 1974's The Lords of Flatbush, followed by Prophecy in 1975.

Assante has played a variety of characters throughout his career, ranging from tough hero roles to historical figures. He essayed the role Sylvester Stallone's brother in Paradise Alley and was seen as a Frenchman and love interest of Goldie Hawn in 1980's Private Benjamin. He portrayed notorious mobsters like Michael Moretti in Sidney Sheldon's Rage of Angels, and John Gotti in the 1996 HBO television film Gotti, a performance which won him a Primetime Emmy Award.

In addition to his portrayals of complex characters, including playing Friedrich Nietzsche in When Nietzsche Wept, and Napoleon Bonaparte in Napoleon and Josephine: A Love Story, Assante has been seen in a number of remarkable films such as The Mambo Kings, Judge Dredd, and American Gangster.
