About Me	Semi retired now and subsidizing with freelance writing. Loving life and the blessings given me. Amen! Who am I? Well, in "this" incarnation… On a cold day in December 1949, Bill and Beverly Bixler welcomed their first child and first daughter on the first day of that month. I was born in a hospital in a pretty town called Red Oak, Iowa because in Carbon where my folks lived no hospital existed. Carbon was a village of 20 houses scattered over a two square mile area of wood, rolling hills and knolls. The Adams County Road cuts through town. I imagine not too long after, cars were on the road, my grandfather’s (my paternal) gas station could be seen facing that county road until sometime in the 1960’s- talk about location, location, location. I must share one more thing about my very humble mid-western beginnings. All around my grandmother’s (my maternal) farmhouse were cornfields. There was corn “as high as an elephant’s eye”, to the right, and to the left side. Grandmother’s house faced North and there was the Adams County Road running parallel to her porch with corn on the other side. Sitting quietly on her front porch in the 1950’s you could hear “snap, crackle, pop”. Yes, you “can” hear the corn grow. My humble beginnings were a springboard for a life well lived on two continents, and a seven-day adventure to a third in the 1980s. Being a wise opportunist, (actually I know karma when I see, taste, or smell it) results in a blessed list of special life experiences: • Had a journalism career, which spans nearly 15 years during one of the most turbulent but important social growth eras in America. 1. Professional Journalist for : An important regional Southern California (still published) Hispanic Community newspaper. (I have just agreed with the publishers/owners to write my own column). Managing Editor of a monthly Hispanic community development magazine published by a Post Secondary Vocational School of Publishing. Eight others and I formed a non-profit corporation. With the California Department of Education granting the school accreditation, the school qualified for monies from the Humanities of the Arts, California State, San Bernardino County, and the City of San Bernardino, California. Served as advisor of a local community weekly newspaper published completely by young people from a gang diversion program, which a grassroots community of volunteers had begun in the early nineteen seventies. I was privileged to be a part of the founding group. Managing Editor of the 5th Army and 17th Air Force NATO command public information newspaper, The Wiesbaden Post for four years (1981-1985). This was during the Beirut Bombing of American Marines and the survivors were hospitalized in the only Military Hospital in NATO at the time, which was Wiesbaden Army Hospital. We were tasked with dealing with the international press. I was "honored" to interview some of the less injured surviving Marines for a special issue of the paper. 2. A member of the Peace Corp domestic branch (Action Vista) for two years with a project for remedial reading to chart the impact on the child’s academic growth.. I designed the program. San Bernardino Valley College, San Bernardino, California Social Science Field Classes had my program as an option for field study. They were assigned one elementary grade student (predominantly Hispanic) identified by a teacher working with the program. The participating elementary school student received one-one-one remedial reading tutoring. In turn, I worked with the sociology instructor to validate the field study completion for grade compliance. 3. Moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1994 and will have with my passing in the distant future my ashes strewn behind a Harley Davidson. Due to the loss of my left eye (because I'm stupid and don't go to doctors) the same thing started happening to my right eye and after 2 months of going to the doctor every two days – good news is I still have my right eye – bad news is I have a corneal scar and am considered "disabled." THUS my opportunistic side again kicks into gear and I received a MAJOR student loan (I may be one of the 10 people from the 1970s who actually paid back my student loan to get my bachelor's degree-lol) and was able to sign up for the UOP masters degree online program. I completed the program in 2009 and earned my masters degree in Education and Curriculum: Adult Education. I am the grandmother of two girls and two boys. I have one daughter. I am a professional portrait artist (commission only), published poet and a social "loner." I love Vivaldi, Handel, Zaideco, R&B, Mo-town Oldies, Jazz, Old Rock and Roll (I was at the Rolling Stone's 1st gig in a US city – San Bernardino, California – The Swing Auditorium 1964 (I was 14-15 years old that year) -Awesome! - Jazz, and New Age music. I went up in a Hot Air Balloon for my 50th birthday- got my 11th tattoo – it is my ONLY colored one. Who am I?
