| About | Sally Elizabeth Smith Sally Elizabeth Smith, 68, of Cornell, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013 at Comforts of Home in Chippewa Falls with family at her side. She was born on Jan. 2, 1945 to Horace (Bud) and Elizabeth (Betsy) White in Chippewa Falls. She graduated from Cornell High School in 1963 and moved to Minneapolis, where she worked in the Public Relations Department at the University of Minnesota. She married Charles (Chuck) Smith at Holy Cross Catholic Church on July 11, 1964 and they moved to Norfolk, Va., where Chuck finished his enlistment in the Navy. Chuck and Sally returned home and settled in River Falls, where Sally worked at Erickson Oil and did child care in her home. She was very active in her church, St. Bridget's. In 1978, Chuck and Sally returned to Cornell and she continued doing in-home child care and later worked as a bookkeeper for Lee's Sales and Service and American Family Insurance, then as the office manager of the Cornell Farmer's Union Co-op for 18 years. Sally was very active in the local high school, her church and her community. She spent many years as the bookkeeper for Holy Cross Catholic Church parish and their own small credit union. She participated in card clubs and book clubs and was on various boards, including the Cornell Police & Fire Commission, the Food Pantry Board, and her true passion, the Cornell Public Library Board. She was an avid reader and often had three or four books going at once. Her family often joked that she owned more books than the Cornell Public Library. Although Sally faced many challenging health issues throughout her life, she had many friends and made the most of every day she had. She enjoyed her book club, card club, and her group of "girls night out" friends. She achieved her lifelong dream of going to New York City, not just once, but twice. She never complained about her challenges and always had a positive outlook. She taught us all how to live and die with dignity and grace. More than anything, she showed us all how to live with courage and a healthy sense of humor. Sally's biggest joys were her two grandsons, Elliott and Oliver. She enjoyed going to their activities and sharing their love of books and sports. She is survived by: her husband of 49 years, Charles (Chuck); her daughter, Jennifer (Bob) Shakal, and grandsons Elliott and Oliver Shakal, all of Chippewa Falls; sons Andrew of Chippewa Falls and Ben (Jane) of Eau Claire; sisters Janet Payne of Racine and Linda Oldenberg of Bloomer; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Sally was preceded in death by: her father, Horace (Bud), in 1981; her mother, Elizabeth (Betsy), in 2012; and her brothers-in-law, James Payne and Verlyn (Ole) Oldenberg. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Cornell, with Father Peter Manickam officiating. Interment will take place at the Cornell Cemetery, Cornell. Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell, with a 7:30 p.m. vigil prayer service. Express online condolences at www.leiserfuneralhome.com Sally requested that all memorials be sent to the Cornell Public Library. |
