Tornberg, age 80, of Marysville, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2025 at the Heritage Senior Living facility in Marysville after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Shirley's 35-year teaching career began in Wisconsin and continued in several Union County elementary schools. She was a "no nonsense" teacher who focused on the importance of reading and phonics in early childhood education. At the same time, Shirley was a loving and caring educator who challenged her students to think independently and yet work together to share ideas. Shirley was a 1963 graduate of Cornell High School in northern Wisconsin. After a year of working in St. Paul, Minnesota, she enrolled in the University of Wisconsin -River Falls, where she received a BS degree in Elementary Education in 1968. Shirley also received a Master’s of Science degree in Education from Wright State University which was sponsored by the Marysville Board of Education. Shirley loved spending time with her grandchildren, family, and close friends. She was an avid tennis player and loved to play cards and read. She always looked forward to those family vacations at the beach which started as a family of five and grew to 14. Fun times were had by all. Shirley was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Marysville. Shirley was born on November 16, 1944 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to the late Elmer C. Yohnk and Charlotte "Lottie" Yohnk. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Kenneth Tornberg, whom she married August 19, 1967 in Cornell, Wisconsin; her children, Sarah Channell of Marysville, Adam (Kara) Tornberg of Marysville, and Jeff (Megan) Tornberg of East Liberty; her grandchildren, Kaleb, Aleah, Zee, and River Tornberg, and Elley and Lyla Channell, all the Marysville area. A funeral service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2025 at Underwood Funeral Home where the family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be held later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Research and Prevention Foundation.
