The parallels with David are in Dan's story of a Modern-Day David---the love of words, of poetry, the search for spirituality, the familiar flaws. The title comes from King Lear when the King says to the Duke of Gloucester on the battlefield:: "We all came crying " into life and but "slenderly know ourselves."
