After graduatiing from Conestoga, "Bob" went to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. Upon graduation in 1978, he went on active duty with the Navy as a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) in the E-2C Hawkeye aircraft with tours of duty in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, and Atlantic Ocean. He transitioned to the reserves and moved to San Diego in 1989 and completed tours in Amphibious Air Control and at Third Fleet as a staff specialist in Joint Air and Missile Defense. He retired with 30 years service in Aug 08.

San Diego Community --- He served on the Vestry at the Church of the Good Samaritan – Episcopal in San Diego, a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Soccer Referee (with over 2500 games reffed since 1984), and he is currently a Boy Scout Leader and Committee Member of Troop 1212 from Mira Mesa, San Diego.

He is married to the former Susan Klimchak of Orange Park, Florida, and has three children: Kenzie, Ian, and Kyle.
