Navy Reserves, 10 Years
All the interns and residents at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha were either women or veterans(except for one NU football player who was a resident who was "physically unable" to be in the military). Since I wanted to specialize, I joined the Navy. They allowed me to finish my Internship and Residency in ophthalmology and Eye Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit before my military service. There was this little thing called Vietnam going on. So after my training was completed in Michigan, I served in the Navy at Oakland Naval Hospital in Oakland, California 1978-1980. They had a special two week basic training in San Diego for all the physicians focused on what we needed to deal with the government and the Navy. My duty was to teach the Navy ophthalmologists how to be eye surgeons and how to be better eye surgeons. We treated active duty as well as many retirees in the Bay area.
I was to work at the Oakland Naval Hospital, Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, the Air Force HOspital at Traverse AFB and Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii. We got referrals from nearly all the states, Guam, Japan, Germany and all across the world. The department expanded from three eye surgies per week, to over twenty. During that time, Oakland was not safe. Our high fenced housing area was patrolled hourly by three Marines in a jeep with fixed bayonets and dog/dogs. The clinic at the Hospital had six eye surgeon trainees and five staff Ophthalmologists, including Dr. Schlichtemeier. It was interesting having trainees, resident ophthalmologists that were significantly older than me.
