About Marilyn Nicoson died April 20 at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts, following a stroke. Marilyn was born November 24, 1931 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Arthur Laughlin Nicoson and Marian Rogers Nicoson. The family moved to Pennsylvania in December, 1939. Marilyn attended schools in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Slippery Rock University. She earned the doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Marilyn taught English at the Concord-Carlisle High School for a number of years. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching. She shared her enthusiasm for the outdoors by serving as a Mariner Girl Scout leader, extending her teaching skills to sailing, canoeing, hiking and camping. Many former students and Mariner Scouts treasured her friendship and kept in touch with her for years. After retiring from teaching, Marilyn worked for several years as a technical editor. In 1993 she extended her love of teaching and learning by enrolling in the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, where she participated in courses on diverse subjects. She read extensively and never tired of the quest for new knowledge and understanding. Marilyn was a humanist member of the First Parish in Concord, and she particularly enjoyed taking part in philosophical discussions with other members. Marilyn sometimes served as a babysitter. because she loved being with children and seeing them learn and grow. Marilyn's closest friends considered her as a dear relative and included her in their holiday trips and family celebrations. She was a good friend to many of her neighbors and fellow church members. Marilyn enjoyed gardening, and for several years she planted bulbs around her Wedgewood Common neighborhood and tended a woodland garden plot. Marilyn was predeceased by her parents and three brothers, Harlan W.Nicoson, William J. Nicoson, and Robert A. Nicoson. She is survived by her sister, Rosalie Nicoson Powelson of Washington, Pennsylvania, and two nephews, John Peterson Nicoson and John Sherman Nicoson. At her request there will be no memorial service.
