About Me | Philip Koplow Philip Koplow (b. 1943) was appointed composer-in-residence at Northern Kentucky University in 1976. The Cleveland native, received his musical education at Kent State University and a doctorate at the Cleveland Institute of Music with composer Donald Erb. He considers himself a survivor of both childhood learning disabilities and the school shootings at Kent State University (May 1970). His struggles to learn to read and his experiences during the turbulent Vietnam era left him with a driving need to communicate and a belief that music - new music - is an important way to affirm humane, community and "classical" values. Many of his projects have had significant community interest and support – like a concert memorializing Jewish poets, murdered under Stalin; the official music for the Cincinnati bicentennial; commemorations for arts patron J. Ralph Corbett, and artist Harlan Hubbard (both with the CSO); artist Frank Duveneck; an "Ex-plor-A-torio" for middle school ensembles (based on the children's poetry); an audience interactive work for the National Symphony (ten performances with over 25,000 students attending); an orchestral song cycle for a community in Alabama (using residents poetry); a commemoration of children and survivors of the Holocaust; and two works of remembrance for 9/11. Three of Koplows projects have been subjects of mayoral proclamations in Cincinnati and Covington. “Composer Philip Koplow is on to something. If you want to excite people about contemporary music, make them a part of it.” Cincinnati Post music critic Mary Ellyn Hutton. His music has been performed by the principal orchestras of Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Los Angles, and many regional and youth ensembles. The CSO and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra have each performed four of his works. He has been honored with a nomination for a Pulitzer Prize and received a Post-Corbett award. Koplow retired from teaching in 2003, but is still a highly active composer. "With the arts we can keep faith with our ancestors, speak for justice, and even address the most tragic and painful issues. If you are hurt and angry don't use violence – write a poem or a song or draw a pict...(read more) |
