Aslak Bråtveit

Class of 1970

Just upgrading: After 40 years of beeing a family doctor ( on an island on the south-west coast of Norway) I retired in december 2018, as I turned 67 years. I have been working in the same farming/gardening/fishing community since 1979. 1986 I did hospital work as a Ob/Gy physician. It has been a good life. I have been married to Signy since 1977, we have 3 grown children and 9 grandchildren. Our youngest son died 3 months old from SIDS. I have had lots of musical joy with piano and the double bass. Classical orchestra music I have enjoyed in the towns I have lived in. Church choir music at Finnøy. For recreation we both do kayaking ( tent life), we have sailed some., I walk the mountains summer( hike) and summer( ski). My christian faith has been of great comfort and social glue. For many years I have been having depressive periods, that has been tiresome. I won a national prize for reseach in general practice ( in 1997: with a work on using CRP ; c-reactive protein measurements by a semiquantitative method as indicator of inflammatory response, specially when diagnosing lower airway infections). Every now and then I have submitted small stories from my work to The norwegian journal of medicine. I was awarded a national medical writing prize for 2016. Our mediical office has been teaching students and interns all along. I was awarded a prize as a teacher from the University of Bergen in 2006. Thats enough of bragging. I still struggle with finding meaningfull activies after all the years of office and off duty medical work . All along I have been resposible for the Nursing home and also the Child health care. I give a lecture now and then, carve wood, play the piano or one of my 3! Hammond organs ( a BC model from 1942 I have totally refubished.) We once ( 1986) were in our way to medical christian work i Bangla desh. It process abruptly terminated, we never got there.
My bodily health suffers but a trifle, I shake somewhat, but I ride my bike as I have done through all my schooll and work years
My wide will be 70 this year. She is energetic, able and caring, has taken up a local political post, is an ever caring grandmother and even loves me still!.. a great blessing.
