| About | Mel went for a walk in the High Uinta Mountains of Utah, near Crystal Lake, on Monday 31 JUL 2017. He did not return. Extensive ground and air search in the following days did not find him. A memorial service was held on Saturday, 14 OCT 2017 in Mesa, AZ. He is survived by his wife Margo and two children. Mel attended UC Berkeley. Served a proselyting mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Germany. Mel graduated from BYU,and later received his Ph.D. in Upper Atmospheric Physics from USU in Logan, UT. He was on the Cross Country and Track teams, lettering in both sports. He was an avid outdoors-man and fisherman, who practiced catch and release. He was a good friend. |

Mel and I were on the Cross Country team and close friends. We often double-dated, and were roommates in college at BYU before he eloped with Margo; We frequently met when he and Margo would summer over in the mountains from the summer heat of Phoenix.
