About Today being Memorial Day, I thought it important that we remember Ed Hayen, a member of our CVHS class of 1964. Ed was born October 30, 1946. Ed had joined the US Marine Corps. July 1972 Ed was two months into his second tour of duty in Vietnam and was a 1st Lieutenant. On July 20th, Ed was beside his Captain in Quang Tri City when they were hit by a mortar round. Ed was killed instantly. His Captain was severely wounded, evacuated and eventually recovered from his injuries. He wrote the official report of the incident.

Last week, I made a short trip to visit my sister-in-law and my niece in Oakland. I hadn't been there in 3 years since just before my older brother died in March 2020. My brother's ashes were at the Queen of Heaven cemetery. That's on Reliez Valley Road, Lafeyette and is just around the hill from Oakmont Memorial Park where Ed is buried. With the help from the Oakmont main office and a groundskeeper, I was able to find Ed's gravesite. I have attached two pictures. One is of the gravesite and the other some steps back overlooking his gravesite towards Mt. Diablo. The American flag in the gravesite picture is something I had brought to honor a friend and just one hell of a great guy. For me, this was a very important visit.
