South English teacher becomes an author

After teaching at South since 2005, English teacher Mike DeLucia has published two works and has his third available on Amazon on 2/4/19. It's called Madness: The Man Who Changed Basketball. Visit booksbymikedelucia.com or his author page on Amazon for more information. Friend request him on Facebook or Twitter. His next work tells the story of how basketball became a global sport. Below is a summary: In the days before the NBA, basketball was a filler sport between baseball and football season. Passing and shooting with two hands was at the center of basketball’s stop-set-shoot philosophy, until Hank Luisetti, a forward from Stanford University, defied the establishment by means of a running one-handed shot. With basketball’s integrity on the line, a promoter from New York arranged a grudge match between LIU and Stanford, in a game that would both test Luisetti’s unorthodox style and determine the unofficial national champion. What followed was a revolution that paved the way to the NBA and sparked national college competition in the month of March. Madness portrays the challenges of hall of famer Hank Luisetti to bust past the barriers of haughty basketball purists, as well as his own demons, and usher in basketball’s modern era. Based on a true story.

Viking Spirit Memorial Scholarship

The class of 1989 recently established the "Viking Spirit Class of 89 Memorial Scholarship" through the Rockland Community Foundation (www.rocklandgives.org/donationspage.html ). This Scholarship was created to honor the memory of classmates we've lost over the years. Our class was truly a close knit group during school, and thanks to social media we continue to reunite annually and support each other in a true Viking spirit.
Sadly we have lost a number of our classmates over the recent years, which has brought the group even closer. So in memory of our friends, we established this scholarship which recognizes a Clarkstown High School South senior who demonstrates a true Viking Spirit of significant leadership responsibility and commitment to helping others through Community Service.

We plan to award the first scholarship in spring of 2016, therefore ask the support of fellow Viking classmates build the fund so we can continue to award a scholarship to a deserving high school senior for years to come. Please help spread the word!

Best wishes from the class of '89.
