Wright McCartney
Class of 1971
Air Force, 4 Years
I completed 4 years of Reserve duty as a scholarship Cadet in AF ROTC at Ga Tech. Uncle Sam paid my way (for the most part) and in return for my earning an Engineering degree on his Nickel, I enlisted as an Airman in Sep 1971 and agreed to 6 years of service after graduation commissioning. My Draft Card wnt from 1-A to 1-D because Uncle had me in his clutches!
Fast forward to 1975. After countless Drills and training classes, and spending parts of my summers in such garden spots as Hurlburt Field, FL, Eglin AIr Force Base, FL (I'm proud to say that not a single North Vietnamese MiG got past Ft. Walton Beach.) Robbins AFB in Warner-Robbins, GA and Vance, AFB in Enid, Oklahoma, our Uncle Sam said Vietnam was over with and I, like many of my peers across the nation, was declared surplus and was released.
Boy did that piss me off!
I was 3 weeks away from 2nd Lieutenant's bars and a year of Navigator school at Mather AFB half way between Reno and San Francisco!
But seriously, I am proud to have made the decision at 18 years old to offer my services to our Nation, and applaud all those CHS grads that did either as a volunteer or after having been drafted.
