About Me | Have been busy, with several separate areas of life. I worked until our 1st son was born. After Sean was born, our lives were entirely devoted to his needs and the needs of other kids in Kansas with congenital heart disease until Sean's death in 1989. After finally accepting his death, we adopted again and have Andrew, born in 1991. He too was a delightful baby and pre-schooler and spent all my time with him until he started Kindergarten. Then became a school volunteer starting in the library, and bacame quite active in PTA, serving as president and vice president there for 4 years. I then became involved in Drug Free Greenville as a volunteer, was recruited to join the board, and chaired 2 Red Ribbon Month's in Greenville (we do it right)! Also chaired Shattered Dreams for our public high school and Christian high schools. Our efforts - an 18 month process were rewarded with an outstanding program, and the award for the Best Shattered Dreams Program in Texas. Was all inclusive including the crash, notification of parents by law enforcement, parent, sibling, and participant retreats, Memorial Assembly with caskets and pall bearers, a trial in a real court with real judges, proceedures etc, and finally ending a few weeks later with the release of our DVD and Hollywood night for our "stars". Was life changing for many involvedl. Am currently serving my 2nd term as a school board member committed to bringing our middle school and high school up to the standards it should have. Am involvled in PTA's as GISD Council President, and have served on at the Area level (north east Texas) for 7 years as the Education Relations Specialist, writing and presenting workshops, helping struggling PTA's having problems among themselves or with their principals, or councils having trouble working with the superintendent. Have also worked for legislative change for schools in Texas. We have had the privilege of serving as host parents for exchange students, and now have our "3rd" son, a young man from Germany, who just recently was here for a month's visit after living with us during the school year 2 years ago. Because our high school was not what it should be, and our son Andy, was hanging out with the wrong crowd, we sent him to a boarding school in a neighboring state. Was a difficult decision, but one that was necessary. We have now become advocates for alternative educational settings, which is tricky while serving on the Greenville school board! We are also involved in our church with the youth, and I play in the Handbell choir, sing in the Chancel Choir and directed Childrens' Choirs for 13 years. Have received a number of awards in the past few years, but am most proud of the award for Shattered Dreams, and the National PTA Life Achievement Award for service to children and youth. The other organization in town that I'm highly involved with is Suzuki Strings Program. We started this over 10 years ago to establish and complete the music program in the district by adding a strings program. Even took violin lessons in order to help work with the younger students. We now have about 70 kids in the program, and our goal is to have an orchestra in just a few more years. Am still playing my flute - which helped me tremendously during my recovery from lung cancera few years back. We are looking forward to having Andy at home with us again once he realizes that he needs to make better choices. In the meantime we are working on ourselves as parenting partners to ensure that we do not fail Andy, and don't allow him to fall into bad patterns when he returns home. Have met some wonderful parents while attending seminars and have discovered that we were "courageous" parents, choosing to send Andy to a school where he will receive an education and a character development program. All the other parents are wonderful people who have other kids at home who have no issues with disrespect, defiance, drugs etc. We have discovered that we intervened early enough to avoid drug and alcohol problems and legal problems that other parents have had to deal with. All of us are learning to go on with our lives (which isn't easy), live without guilt and...(read more) |
