| Favorite School Memory | I can't say that high school was a great experience for me--like most schools, there were a lot of cliques, and people were not nice. I still remember "who said what" to me and others. I hope they reflect back on their lives and wish they could apologize, because back then, if I seemed "weird" to you, it's because there was a lot going on at home, and I had what later would be diagnosed as bipolar disorder. I had a few very good friends--one of my best memories was when Danielle and I snuck out and took her parents' car and met our friend Eric in the woods. We got together with some older kids from Pennsauken that night and both started dating people from that group. I still miss Danielle, and regret that our friendship ended because I was obsessed with some guy and she found other friends. It broke my heart. Years later, when my brother died, she sent me a card and said she wished we had stayed friends. That was my opportunity to re-connect, but I was still really grieving, and didn't respond to anyone. Thank you for that card. You were a great friend to me. Another was when Dave and I ditched our prom dates and walked back to my house to watch movies. There was the time he was driving his sister's Camaro to pick up his date's corsage, but he wasn't great at driving stick...it kept stalling, so he just said, "You drive." I did, but I didn't have my license yet. We had been friends since 6th grade--he used to be on the cross country team and he'd tell me to go running with him because I was getting fat. We watched movies a lot--Clockwork Orange, Pink Floyd's The Wall...he was like a brother to me. And then there was Nikki--we tried to start a punk band called "Purple Passion..." She was one of my first and only friends when I first moved to Cinnaminson in 5th grade. Julianna and I used to smoke pot with my boyfriend Mike and we'd drive to the beach and play our guitars. Amie and I became friends later in high school, but probably should've started sooner. I got her a job at the bagel shop and we worked a lot together. She made me the most thoughtful gifts I ever got--still have the hand painted journal. She's the only one I stayed friends with after high school for awhile. There was another prom weekend when we all went to Amy S's home in Margate and then Ocean City--that's the weekend I became a vegetarian and cooked for everyone. Amy S. and I wrote a song about Catcher in the Rye for a school project and performed it for the class. I could go on, but it's all in the past. No one that I was friends with then...(read more) |
