Edward Tiffin Cook Sr., a proud alumnus of Chillicothe High School in Chillicothe, Ohio, was an acclaimed American athlete known for his significant contributions to pole vaulting. Born on November 27, 1888, in Chillicothe, Ohio, United States, this accomplished sportsman demonstrated exceptional talent in athletics, specifically in pole vault, long jump, high jump, and sprinting.

Cook's athletic career is marked by numerous admirable achievements, including his gold medal win at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. In a memorable event, he shared this honor in pole vault with his fellow American athlete Alfred Carlton Gilbert. This victory cemented his legacy as one of the leading figures in the filed of pole vaulting in the early 20th century.

In addition to his triumphant Olympic run, Cook also held impressive personal records in various sporting events: a pole vault record of 3.81 meters in 1911, a long jump record of 7.15 meters in 1906, a high jump record of 1.835 meters in 1906, and an astounding 100-yard dash in just 10.0 seconds in 1906.

Beyond his Olympic success, Cook was also a two-time IC4A long jump champion in 1908 and 1909, and a two-time AAU pole vault champion in 1907 and 1911. He was a member of the prestigious Cleveland Athletic Club, further evidencing his commitment to athletics.

After graduating from Cornell University in 1910, Cook lived a significant life outside the athletic field as well. He was a successful farmer and went on to become a director at the First National Bank in his native Chillicothe, Ohio. His varied pursuits made him an influential figure both in the realm of athletics and his local community. He was elected into the Sphinx Head Society during his senior year, a testament to his academic prowess and overall personality.

In the grand scheme of Olympic history, Edward Cook features prominently in the list of champion men's pole vaulters, standing shoulder to shoulder with other illustrious athletes such as William Hoyt, Irving Baxter, and Charles Dvorak.

Cook passed away on October 18, 1972 in his birthplace of Chillicothe, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy of incredible sporting achievement and community service that continues to inspire generations.
