Later, on 11 November 1943, near Magnano Italy, Floyd, armed only with his .45 calibre pistol, singlehandely attacked an enemy machinegun nest which was decimating his squad. He wiped out the nest occupants then siezed the heavy-machine gun and carried it to his squad's position. Under withering enemy fire, he returned to the enemy position, retrieved the gun's ammunition and returned again to his squad. There, he turned the captured weapon on the counterattacking enemy thus thwarting their attack. For his selfless bravery Floyd was cited, to recieve his Nation's highest award, the MEDAL of HONOR, "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity involving risk of life above the call of duty in action with the enemy." He was offered the opportunity to serve in a safe rear area but he declined and returned to his unit. On 3 February 1944, Floyd was killed while leading his squad against the enemy. His MEDAL of HONOR was presented to his mother at a ceremony at Fort Carson, CO, on 26 April 1944, by General Terry Allen who referred to Floyd as "a one man army." (re. /Colo.
