Dave is a graduate of the former Chestnut Consolidated High School (CCHS), which was part of the Horry County School System in South Carolina until county schools desegregated in 1970, when the school became North Myrtle Beach High School. After serving three years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, he subsequently earned bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering from City College of New York and Manhattan College (NY) respectively. He has received numerous awards for his work in industry and volunteer activities. Most recently, his focus has been on closing the performance gap between white and black students and K-12 mathematics education.

He has contributed to and written several CCHS Alumni Newsletters, made presentations at Alumni banquets, and provided advice and guidance to the alumni committee. In addition, Dave was instrumental in getting CCHS Historical Marker approved by the state and erected. He is the author of the wording on the marker. He is married to Beverly Foster Wilson, who is a family nurse practitioner (FNP) for the Little River Medical Center. They have two adult sons, two daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren. His favorite pass time is reading, watching television programs crime stories recreated, history and science channels; and most important spending time with his grandchildren every chance he gets.
