Susanne's family came to the community in 1939 after escaping Germany. Her father had been active in opposition to the Nazi Government and society, After graduating Cheltenham and obtaining her PhD from Harvard she and her husband Lloyd eventually came to the University of Chicago where they became outstanding professors of Political Science with a focus upon India . She had a distinguished career and at one time was the chair of the American Political Science Association,
