Graduation Year Class of 1974
Date of Passing May 13, 1975
About Airman Edgar Moran was stationed at the Royal Thai Air Force Base, as part of the 56th Security Police Squadron. He volunteered for a mission to rescue the crew of the USS Mayaguez, which had been taken captive by Cambodians, after combat operations had ceased in Vietnam.

The H-53 helicopter crashed, possibly due to mechanical failure or shot down, it is unknown, but all 23 airmen and flight crew were killed. There were more disasters to follow and we lost more men in the following days to rescue the Mayaguez. There are many good websites that document this. The crew of the Mayaguez had been released before the carnage, but no one related this to these brave men who fought valiantly to save them.

Ed died in Thailand but he is listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. He was in what is known as the Final Battle of the Vietnam War. His name is on the last panel of the Wall.

Ed was the beloved son of Betty McCalmon and Edgar Moran, and he had 4 sisters. (Update, 2 of his sisters have passed away, Millie Rivera and Sondra Ferris. Sondra died 1-12-2011.)
~~~~~~~~~~
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of, wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
Rest in peace, dear Hero.
