Bobby was a very sick young man. He had undergone 3 liver transplants at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh in a span of 3 and 1/2 months before a massive stroke claimed his life. His doctor said Bobby put up a heroic fight. Two of the liver transplants failed due to rejection, but the third was working almost normally, his doctor said.
Bobby's case was the first time that Dr. Thomas Starzl, a liver transplant pioneer, had implanted 3 livers in a single patient. Doctors were not sure of the reason for Bobby's stroke.
Bobby was 18 years old and would have graduated in 1982. He was the beloved son of Thomas & Patricia Sams, brother of Lorraine & Janine Sams. Interment was made in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Rest in Peace, Bobby.
