Evangelist Velma Eunice Coleman Griggs, affectionately known as Mom, GiGi, Grandma, Aunt V, Velm, and Evangelist Velma, transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on April 26, 2026, at the age of 80. Born in Pittsburgh, Velma was raised on the North Side of PA, in a strong, faith-centered family rooted in love, discipline, and spiritual legacy. Velma was educated in the Pittsburgh Public School system and attended Chartiers Valley High School. She met and married Edwin C. Griggs (now deceased) and became the proud parents of one daughter, Edra Marie Griggs, and one son, Louis Richard Griggs. She continued her education at the Community College of Allegheny County, where she pursued studies in social science. Answering a divine calling deeply embedded in her lineage, Velma was ordained as an evangelist under Bishop Charles Major. Ministry was not new to her; it was generational, and she continued a sacred family legacy of serving God's people. Evangelist Griggs became a respected and recognizable voice in the community through her work with Pittsburgh Community Television, where she hosted "And the Beat Goes On" and "Personal Reflections," uplifting voices, highlighting local talent, and sharing messages of faith and truth throughout the city and beyond. She was widely known as a pillar in communities including Beltzhoover, Knoxville, and St. Clair Village, where she mentored youth, encouraged others, and remained present in the lives of those around her. Velma lived her faith daily. Her home reflected her devotion, scriptures tucked into books and Bibles, notes placed with intention, and anointing oil at her doorway. She was always prepared to uplift someone with a word, a gesture, or a gift. She loved her city, its people, and its culture. She enjoyed reading, traveling, learning, and collecting meaningful artifacts. She found joy in life's simple pleasures: crab legs, a Pepsi, and baking her beloved poundcake. In her earlier years, Velma was known for her bold and fearless spirit. Over time, that strength matured into wisdom, grace, and spiritual authority that impacted countless lives. Through her work with Pittsburgh Community Television, she created space for others to be seen and heard. Her shows: "And the Beat Goes On" and "Personal Reflections," weren't just programs; they were platforms for people. She shined light on ALL communities.
