Man perishes in blaze during storm
By Corrine Rodriguez June 19, 2001
A 45-year-old man died in an overnight house fire on June 9, 2001 during Tropical Storm Allison. Investigators have not yet determined whether or not the storm played a role in the fatal blaze.
Steve McConnell was found dead in his home by the Cut N' Shoot and Splendora Fire Departments at approximately 1 a.m. The two fire departments did encounter some high water over the roadways while traveling to the fire scene. The home was completely gutted by the fire.
"The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It does appear that the fire started in the living room. Mr. McConnell was the only one in the house," said Jimmy Williams, senior investigator of the Montgomery County Fire Marshall's Office (MCFMO).
The storm playing a role in the blaze may be a possibility according to Williams. "It is possible that the storm could have contributed to the cause of the fire. Maybe it was electrical and water got into the electrical system," said Williams.
The MCFMO has an ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire and McConnell's death.
McConnell was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Cynthia McMillian. An autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death, although, according to Williams, McConnell likely died of smoke exhaustion. Preliminary investigation indicated that there were no working smoke detectors in McConnell's home.
"More than likely, the smoke got to McConnell before the fire did. The smoke can disorient a person so that they can't think properly," said Williams.
Williams recommends that everyone have at least one smoke detector in every bedroom of their home.
