About | A beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and colleague, Sara Gillis Hawkins (formerly Sara Dawn Gillis), 46 years old, of Chevy Chase, MD died of complications related to cancer in her home, surrounded by loved ones on July 9, 2024. She showed bravery, courage, grace, and determination in her 28 months battle with cancer. Sara was born in Pittsburgh, PA on April 28, 1978 to Alan and Faith (Fedorko) Gillis, who provided unwavering love and affection to Sara throughout her entire life. Sara attended Chartiers Valley High School before studying Political Science at the University of Delaware, and then pursuing her law degree at American University in Washington, DC. After graduation from law school, she pursued a career as a securities lawyer, ultimately working as a regulator at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission ("SEC"), where she worked for almost 20 years. Sara married Charles (Chuck) Hawkins September 4, 2004 and raised 2 wonderful and beautiful children, Molly (13) and Jack (11). The children were her love and the driving force in her life. Sara was passionate about fighting cancer not for herself but for others. She and Chuck created Team Ladyhawk to raise money for rare cancer research through Cycle for Survivals. Her legacy was the raising of over a half a million dollars for this worthy cause. Sara is survived by her parents, Alan and Faith, her brother Gregg Gillis and wife Kendall (Remy and Cameron), her husband, Chuck, and her two beloved children, Molly and Jack. She is additionally survived by her Aunt Hope Krieg and husband Ambrose, Aunt Shelley Weiss, Aunt Marcie Gillis, Aunt Cathy Gillis. And cousins Ben Gillis (Stacey), Annie Borowski (David). Amber Krieg, David Krieg, and Christopher Krieg (Breey Meyer). Sara was proceeded in death by her grandparents Henry and Zelda Gillis, Jane and Anthony Scutella, and Michael Fedorko Sr. Her uncles Sidney Gillis, Martin Gillis, and Michael Fedorko Jr. |
