About	Larry James Swanson: June 17, 1936 - Aug. 30, 2001 Larry James Swanson, 65, of to Charlevoix, , died Aug. 30, 2001 at his home from complications related to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) following a three-year illness. The funeral was at 3 p.m., Sept. 2 at Charlevoix Community Church of God. Pastor Neil Tumer officiated and burial followed at Barnard Cemetery. Larry was born June 17, 1936, to Lawrence O. "Stub" and Alma (Hartwell) Swanson in Charlevoix. He attended Charlevoix Public Schools, graduating in 1955. On May 17, 1958 he married Verna Williams at United Mission ary Church in East Jordan. He served in the US. Army from 1959-1962. After his service with the Anny, he and his wife, returned to Charlevoix where they made their home. Larry was employed with the family business, Swanson Construction, for many years. He also worked at Freeman Artcraft, Klooster Equipment and retired from Medusa/Southdown Cement Company. He was an accomplished driver and operator of heavy equipment. He also owned and operated his own lawn care business. He enjoyed hunting, camping, woodworking, his family (particularly his grandchildren) and his friends who fondly referred to him by his nickname "Speedy." He was a member of Charlevoix Community Church of God. He was a charter member of the Charlevoix Township Fire Department and also served with the Charlevoix City Fire Department for many years. In addition to his wife, Verna, he is survived by three sons, L. Scott (Kathy) Swanson of Indian River. Gregg (Janice) Swanson of East Jordan, Nick (Melissa) Swanson of Charlevoix; mother, Alma Swanson, of Charlevoix; sister, Nancy Burdick of Ypsilanti; three brothers, Tom (Joan) Swanson of Tucson, Ariz., Kevin (Barb) Swanson of Charlevoix. Dave Swanson of Charlevoix; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Charlevoix Community Church of God or to ALS of Michigan, Inc.
