Margaret "Jeanne" Carey, 78, of Charlevoix, died Nov. 11, 1998, at Boulder Park Terrace Nursing Home in Charlevoix.
Funeral service was Saturday, Nov. 14 at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix, and the Rev. Margaret A. Nattermann officiated. Burial took place in Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix.
Jeanne was born Dec. 24, 1919, in Charlevoix, the daughter of Peter and Julia (Corlett) Campbell. She graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1938. Her senior year of high school was delayed because she was stricken with polio. After high school, she went on to the University of Michigan to receive a bachelor's degree in literature, graduating in 1942. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
On Oct. 27, 1943, she married Charles Carey in Charlevoix, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1996.

Following World War II, she and her husband owned Carey's Boot Shop in Cheboygan. In 1963, they moved to Charlevoix to operate Campbell's Boot Shop following her father's death. At that time, they changed the name of the business to Carey's Boot
Shop. In the 1950s through the 1970s they also operated a shoe mart in Charlevoix.
Jeanne participated in the Charlevoix Area Garden Club and the Charlevoix Book Club. She enjoyed reading, boating and golfing, and attended Christ Epis- copal Church.
Survivors include two sons, Randy Carey and his wife, Nancy, of Charlevoix, and Pete Carey and his wife, Betsy, of Neenah, Wis.; five grandchildren, Matt of Neenah, Wis., Jill Henshaw and her husband, Jeff, also of Neenah, Kate of Montana, Lauren of Austin, Texas, and Sean and his wife, Kristin, Of Antioch, Calif.; Three great-grandsons, Kamren Bryce Carey of Antioch, Calif., Jack Henshaw of Neenah, Wis., and Rollin Cade Severson of Austin, Texas; and by one sister, Julia Anne Bandfield and her husband, A.C. Curly Bandfield of Bonsall, Calif. Jeanne was preceded in death by her son, Topper, and brother, Paul Daniel. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Charlevoix Public Library.
