About Lorita Mae Swan, 91, of Cheboygan, died Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Brook Retirement Community in Cheboygan with her son Duane, at her side. Visitation will be held at Nordman-Christian funeral Home on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Faith Baptist Church, with Pastor Jim Currie will officiating; military honors will immediately follow the service. Interment will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia. Lorita was born February 3, 1921 in Charlevoix, MI. She was the daughter of Francis and Gertrude (Sprik) Matchett. Lorita grew up in Charlevoix with 2 brothers and 4 sisters and graduated from Charlevoix High School. She then graduated from nursing school in Grand Rapids, Michigan before entering the military. She was a veteran of World War II. She served in the U.S. Army in France, Iran, and Iraq as a first lieutenant nurse. Her family is very proud of this service to her country. In November, 1946, Lorita married Charles R. Swan in Detroit (a fellow WWII Veteran) where the couple made their home. He preceded her in death in 1977. After a period of moving, Lorita settled in Cheboygan in 1989, where she has been since. Lorita was an active member of Faith Baptist Church. She was known to many as grandma. She enjoyed reading her bible, teaching Sunday school to little ones, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Ronald (Linda) Swan of Howell, MI, Duane (Nancy) Swan of Cheboygan, MI, Kenny (Lisa) Swan of St. Louis, MO, Teresa (Harley) Phillips of Kansas City, MO; thirteen grandchildren; Ryan, Adam, Abbey, Andrew, Alex, Maggie, Jeff, Ashton, Alyson, Olivia, Amonee, Alivia, and Airiel; five great grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel Heldt of Clinton Township, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles, three sisters, and two brothers.
