| About | Ralph S. Hamilton Ralph S. Hamilton, 95, of Charlevoix, died July 28, 1999, at Boulder Park Terrace Nursing Home. Funeral Mass was held Saturday, July 31, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix, the Rev. Thomas Neis officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery Ralph was born May 12, 1904, in Charlevoix, the son of Sam and Dora (Billington) Hamilton. He attended McLachlin-Davenport Business School in Grand Rapids, which is now Davenport College. On Aug. 16. be married Margit (Czrny) Cherney in Middle Village Mission. She preceded him in death July 11, 1983. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard at Charlevoix's Life Saving Station. Mr. Hamilton worked in the oil fields of Oklahoma until the late 1920s. He was employed by White Star Gas Station in the late 1920s, and was part of Hamilton and Sons Boat Co. in Charlevoix until 1932. He was an accountant in Charlevoix for more than 70 years, and was manager of Wm. Wallace Gasoline Co. for 15 years. Mr. Hamilton served as deputy county clerk and the road commission clerk for 24 years in Charlevoix. He also served as public administrator and two terms on city council. For nine years he was on the Senior Housing Commission. Mr. Hamilton was one of the founders and the oldest member of St. Mary's Credit Union, which became Charlevoix Federal Credit Union and was recently renamed Bay Winds Federal Credit Union. He was in charge of organizing memorials for World War 1 World War II and Korean War veterans at Memorial Park. Bridge Park and East Park, all in Charlevoix. He was a life member of the Charlevoix Historical Society and served as president for two years. He was a 50-year member of Kiwanis Club, serving as past lieu tenant governor. He was a George Hixson Fellow of the National Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the American Philanthropic Society and was a charter member of the Road Runners. He was also a member of the Birch Beaver Masticators Brotherhood, which is no longer in existence. Mr. Hamilton was a proponent of the Charlevoix pool since 1959. Survivors include three sons, David A. Hamilton and his wife, Chris, of DeKalb, III., Nick V. Hamilton and his wife, Anne, of Traverse City, and Ralph "Sam" Hamilton and his wife, June, of Rantoul, Ill.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hamilton was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Reno, and by his sister, Clara. Funeral arrangements were handled by Winchester Funeral Home in Charlevoix. |
